Rubio Examines Bukele's Proposal for US Prisoners

The United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, expressed in a press conference in San José, Costa Rica, that they will study the proposal from the President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, regarding housing U.S. prisoners in Salvadoran prisons. Rubio emphasized the generosity of Bukele's proposal and mentioned that legal aspects related to this initiative must be considered.

Rubio arrived in Costa Rica from El Salvador and stated that Bukele's proposal is unique in sending dangerous criminals abroad at a much lower cost. The U.S. Secretary of State mentioned that it is necessary to analyze in detail the feasibility of carrying out this proposal and to verify its legality.

For his part, Bukele explained on social media that the proposal involves exclusively receiving convicted criminals, including those with U.S. citizenship, in a high-security prison in El Salvador called the Center for the Confinement of Terrorism. The Salvadoran president highlighted that the fee for each detainee would be beneficial for El Salvador and would help improve its penitentiary system.

It is worth noting that the Salvadoran prison system presents a level of overcrowding of 133.62%, according to official figures cited by humanitarian organizations. These same sources indicate that El Salvador has the highest incarceration rate in the world, with 1,496 prisoners per 100,000 inhabitants.
