Panamanian Saxophonist Miguel Arauz to Teach at Costa Rica's Nicoya Instrumental Encounter

Renowned Panamanian musician Miguel Arauz joins the teaching faculty of the Nicoya Instrumental Encounter 2026 in Costa Rica. He shared his experience working with youth and expressed admiration for the talent of local students, emphasizing the importance of such cultural events for shaping the new generation.

This week in Guanacaste (Costa Rica), renowned Panamanian saxophonist Miguel Arauz is part of the teaching team for the Nicoya Instrumental Encounter 2026. Arauz, a member of the Big Band that accompanies maestro Rubén Blades and a professor at the University of Panama, was drawn to the event by the opportunity to work with young musicians outside his country. His connection to Costa Rica was strengthened after meeting Kevin García, the artistic director of the Nicoya Instrumental Encounter, during a previous visit with Rubén Blades. "Before working at the university, I was always linked to schools and this type of musical camps," Arauz explained. He expressed his admiration for the local students from Nicoya and Guanacaste, stating, "Some have impressed me a lot. A generation is coming that is going to play very well." He emphasized the lasting impact of such events, even for those not pursuing music professionally. "I came out of processes like this myself, and I know the impact they have on the formation of young people," he commented. Arauz believes these spaces foster an appreciation for art and culture, which is fundamental in countries where local heritage is often undervalued. "They will be adults who appreciate art, who respect culture, and that is fundamental in our countries, where the authentic and cultural is often minimized," he expressed. The Nicoya Instrumental Encounter 2026 is a free, intensive musical training space that brings together students, teachers, and musicians for master classes, specialized workshops, ensembles, group practice sessions, and concerts. Its goal is to strengthen technical skills, artistic discipline, and a love for music in new generations. The event is backed by the Municipality of Nicoya as part of its commitment to promoting culture, art, and the comprehensive development of children and youth in the canton.
