A court in Costa Rica has sentenced a doctor to 30 years in prison for the femicide of his wife, whom he killed with injections under the pretext of treatment. Doctor Carmona JaƩn killed his wife, Raquel Arroyo Aguilar, on July 15, 2020. He administered benzodiazepines and diphenhydramine to her, claiming it was for her colitis, which caused her death. The victim died from mixed intoxication, pulmonary edema, and hemorrhage at their home, where their children were also present. The court found that in mid-2020, the woman had intended to separate from Carmona to break the cycle of violence she was suffering. According to official data, at least 1,118 women were killed in Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Panama in 2024. The Costa Rican Judicial Observatory on Gender-Based Violence Against Women has counted 32 femicides so far in 2025, compared to 40 in 2024.
